I started my teaching career at Massey High School in 2006, and it is the quality of our people, and our community that kept me here. It is our diversity at Massey High School that has always been our greatest asset. Our collective strengths and expertise coupled with our wealth of different perspectives is what underpins our culture here.
It was a huge honour to be appointed in May 2022 as Massey High School’s 5th Principal in over 50 years and to be able to build on the work of my predecessors, ensuring that Massey High School is the outstanding school that our students, staff, and community deserves.
Our Massey High School Values of Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, and Rangatiratanga permeate all we do as we prepare our students for life in 21st century New Zealand and the wider world. Our four Houses and horizontal tutor structure mean that our learners are known and cared for as individuals. The school’s team of Deans, Ākina Leaders, Teachers, Counsellors, Nurses, Careers staff, and Support Staff work closely together to support all our young people.
At Massey High School that staff strive to ensure that our students graduate not only having achieved the highest qualification possible in their chosen pathway, but also having developed into young adults who are articulate communicators, who think critically, who are open minded and accept diversity, who understand respectful relationships, and who have had a rounded experience and enjoyed success. Furthermore, to realising the core principle of Te Tiriti o Waitangi which is partnership, and that everyone, student, staff, whānau, Māori and non-Māori alike, can walk confidently in two worlds.
We believe that by providing our students with exceptional opportunities and experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, we will grow aspirational leaders who will influence their community and lead happy and successful lives. Massey High School provides our students with the opportunity to pursue a multitude of learning pathways depending on where their aspiration and passion lies. These pathways recognise that success takes many different forms for our students. Our world leading Academies programmes further strengthen those choices.
Our school offers an array of sporting, cultural, leadership, and arts opportunities that are critical to ensuring that our students enjoy their time at school. They enhance their wellbeing, their growth as well-rounded young adults, and their connection to our school.
We have high expectations for our students in terms of engagement, behaviour, uniform, and attendance. We embrace innovation, creativity and best practice teaching which allows for an academically rich environment. Our number one asset are our teachers, who are absolutely committed to building positive relationships, crafting curriculum, and leading a classroom that engages students. You would be hard pressed to find teachers elsewhere who are more committed to the growth and development of their students as those at Massey High School.
