Evolocity Regional Finals
Sunday 15th October 2023 - N Hackett (Manager).
The MHS Evolocity Team is a group of four Year 12 students who have been working on converting bicycles over to bikes that are driven by an electric motor. All the bikes that are entered in the competition have to be registered and use the standard motors that are supplied by the Evolocity group. Our students entered 2 bikes into the standard class. They are also working on converting a 240 litre plastic rubbish bin into a motorized go kart. Unfortunately, the kart was not ready in time for the regional finals but will be further developed for next year when it will be entered into the open class final and fitted with a more powerful motor.
They arrived early Sunday morning, set up a Massey High "pit" where they could service the bikes "Nutcracker" and "The Other Bike". The team prepped them for scrutineering, where they both got knocked back for some small things. The team got to work and after fixing the issues, raced both bikes in the gymkhana, the drag race (where Nutcracker came second), then the endurance race (2 laps of the whole circuit, with a pitstop and driver swap after lap 1), where Nutcracker won. In between races there was quite a bit of fixing the bikes, but as we would say, there's no problem you can't solve with cable ties and duct tape as the photos show.
At the end of the regional finals the team did very well and came second overall in the standard bike class for the Auckland region. The individual results included a second in the drag race whereby the bike was 11.3 seconds over 50 metres and a first in the endurance race.
The team are now invited to compete at the National Finals at Mt Wellington Auckland on Saturday 28th October. We wish them all the best. The team for 2023 are Kiran Whyte, Sam Anderton, Ryan Fairweather and Sam Ogilvy.
Many thanks go to Mr Thompson for all the extra work and guidance he puts in and to Ms Whyte for supporting the team on the day.
