SEMESTER ONE

RITCHIES

At the start of the year, our Year 10 Advanced Art class was invited to visit the new Ritchies bus services offices in Swanson.  They gave the students a tour of the grounds and operations to inspire them to create large scale artworks for them.  As we have a good relationship with Ritchies, they wanted to involve our students and promote Massey High School by putting their work on display at their offices.   This was the first time students made large scale paintings and they loved it.

MANDALA ART

Mrs. Setchell had the brilliant idea to do Mandala Art with her Year 10 class.  This became so popular, all Year 10 classes asked to do it.   It not only gives them the opportunity to be creative in a different way, but it has proven to calm students down and focus better.

RESENE MURAL COMPETITION

We started the year with new standards for the Level 1 students.  One of the internals asked for large scale paintings.  Resene launched their mural competition offering huge discounts on paint if we entered.  It was a win win for all, as we got good quality paint, made beautiful murals for our school and the students got credits for their hard work.   Resene will announce the winner in November.

ART TRIP TO AUCKLAND GALLERY AND WHITECLIFF STUDIOS

In June the Year 12 and 13 students attended a workshop at Auckland Gallery.  The organisers of the gallery took them on a tour of “The Robertson Gift”.  This exhibition included original art works from Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Piet Mondrian, Paul Cezanne and George Braque, just to name a few.  These are considered to be the rock stars of the art world and to see them first hand is such an enourmous privilege. The workshop focused on understanding art, artictic styles and art analysis. This was a fantastic introduction to the internal standards both levels would need to do.

At Whitecliff studios the student got the opportunity to view all the L3 NCEA external folio boards for 2023 that received excellence. It gave them a good indication what to aim for. The lecturers were there to answer any questions and to talk to the students about time management in art and the courses on offer at Whitecliff. The students then had the unique opportunity to view the final year art student exhibition, not open to the public.
