Principal's Pānui

17 February 2025

As we come to the end of the first full 6-day cycle, we can reflect on a positive start to the year.

Our Year 9 cohort is the largest we have had for many years with 476 Year 9 students beginning at Massey High School. The vast majority of these students are in-zone enrolments – as are all of the additional students who have joined us from Years 10 to 13. Our total school roll now sits at just over 2,000 students. The immediately noticeable effect of this growth is a vibrancy and bustle to the school. However, this growth in our roll also paves the way for new and varied opportunities for our student body and for improvement of school facilities.

Scholarship Exams

Some fantastic news came in regarding NZQA Scholarship Results, with Massey High School students gaining 17 scholarships, our best result for a number of years. This result is a reflection of the effort put in by the students themselves, and of the support provided by teachers in the school. Scholarship examinations are a very different beast to Level 3 subject examinations, requiring much more from students undertaking them. However, the reward for students goes far beyond financial – with the skills they develop for these exams preparing them for any number of real-world challenges in the future.

Three of the scholarships gained are Outstanding Scholarships – these place the students in the top 0.3% of students in New Zealand for that subject.

A huge congratulations to the following students – their year level as of 2024 in brackets.

Year 9 and new to Massey High School Whānau

Parents and caregivers of students new to Massey High School would have received notification of our event this Wednesday that allows you to meet with your child’s Tutor and Ākina Leader. The event takes place between 6 and 7pm, meeting in the BRPAC first. It is an opportunity to put a face to the name of the people you will most likely be in contact with, and to become familiar with the reporting systems used here at Massey.

Year 9

We are investing heavily in our new Year 9 cohort, with the aim of better preparing them for their time at secondary school. Part of this will take place in the classroom, with our soon-to-start programme designed to equip our Year 9 students with the skills and habits they will need to ensure success in later years. An equally important part though is their wider school life, the little things that aid their development as well-rounded young adults.

Next week, each House (Year 9 only) will enjoy an activity day at Parakai – being joined on the day by their Tutor Teachers, Deans, and House Leaders with the aim being to bond as a House prior to our upcoming full school House competition known as Tabloids Day.

There is no cost to families for the activity, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Jelas Trust. Initial documentation has been sent to all parents/caregivers of Year 9 students.
